Court Reporting Legislative Alert The Louisiana Legislature is in session and will be possibly through June. Bills that are of great concern to the reporting profession have been filed. We at VRLA are monitoring them closely. Please check here often as we will be updating information important to our profession. We will have to have aggressive activity on the part of all concerned court reporters to contact their legislators and/or judges and/or attend hearings at the Capitol in Baton Rouge to defeat any bills that are adverse to our interest. A link is provided below giving the identity and contact information for the individual legislators who are members of the House Judiciary Committee that will be considering these bills, along with links to the text of the bills that were filed. House bill 37 and House bill 160 came up for consideration before the committee on April 17. House bill 37 was voluntarily deferred by the legislator introducing the bill (Guillory) and can be brought up for hearing again before the committee during this session. We are monitoring this bill closely. House bill 160 was involuntarily deferred by vote of the committee and cannot be heard again during this session. HCR 104 (concurrent resolution) has been introduced and will be heard on Wednesday, May 14, before the House Judiciary Committee. This resolution was introduced by Representatives Monica and Leger, and would provide to commission a study by the judicial administrator considering the shortage of court reporters in small, rural parishes, and to recommend solutions to this shortage. We will be monitoring this hearing and will ask that we be allowed to provide input into the study. House Bill 37 link HCR 104 |
